In the very harsh winter of 1962/63, numbers of Dartford Warblers in the UK dropped to 10 or less pairs.  This was due to the long lasting severe freezing conditions and also to the fact that at the time they were our only resident warblers plus their insect and spider food was killed off by the weather.  Since then their numbers have more than regained their former strength and the heathlands of the New Forest are among the best places in Britain to see them.  That is where this photograph was taken.
