During years when there is an abundance of acorns falling from the oak trees in the New Forest, pigs will often be released into the woodlands to eat them. Acorns are poisonous to ponies and cattle so it seems to be a sensible precaution. Ponies seem to like the taste of acorns and when there is a heavy crop of them as many as 100 ponies may die from acorn poisoning. Here young pigs are feasting beneath an oak tree close to the Forest village of Fritham.
